Report On The ZIMSEZA Media Brief

1.0 Introductions and Welcome Remarks

On Tuesday 12 June 2018, the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority successfully hosted a breakfast media brief. The purpose of the media brief was to update all media houses on the developments that have taken place at the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority since the appointment of the Board on 26 June 2017. The invitees for the brief were drawn from all media houses in the country. The invitees were from over fifteen media houses in the country which included ZBC, the Herald, the Financial Gazette, the NewsDay, the Independent, the Daily News and others.

The Director of Ceremonies welcomed everyone to the media brief and explained the purpose of the meeting. Emphasis was made on the importance of the media as a key communication and marketing strategic partner for ZIMSEZA

2.0 Remarks by the Chairman of the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Board

The Chairman of the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Board, Dr. G. Gono, addressed the Media on behalf of the Board. The Chairman informed the media that the SEZ Regulations and non- fiscal incentives were going to be gazetted as both the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise Development and His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe have prioritised the same. He advised all investors that with the gazetting of the Regulations and Incentives comes the licensing and designation of all projects. He kindly requested investors to submit specific projects that speak to the exact location of their proposed factories, business plans with projections of export generation or level of import substitution, employment creation, technology transfers and implementation time tables.

3.0 Remarks by the C.E.O of the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones Authority

The Chief Executive Officer, Mr. E. Kondo, also gave a brief statement summarising the key deliverables of ZIMSEZA as:

  10. Draft ZIMSEZA Communication Strategy
  11. Draft ZIMSEZA HR Policy

He went on to explain the criteria for considering applications. He concluded by re-emphasizing the critical role of the media in the operations of the Zimbabwe Special Economic Zones.

4.0 Question and Answer Session

There was a lively question and answer session that was facilitated by the ZIMSEZA Secretariat. Questions that were asked by the media were all answered by the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer to the satisfaction of the participants. The Secretariat distributed the Frequently Asked Questions on SEZs to the media for publishing in order to help stakeholders understand the procedures and operations of ZIMSEZA.

5.0 Vote of Thanks

The participants were thanked for attending the media briefing, despite the cold weather. The participants were encouraged to walk into the C.E.O`s office for any inquiries. The media was assured that ZIMSEZA was also “Open for Business” as H.E. the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe has consistently and passionately said.
